Crazy Paving: An Old Tradition into a Modern Setting
Discover unique materials, practical benefits and inspiring projects.
Crazy paving brings an old tradition into a modern setting. Its organic shapes add a natural flow to any garden, creating soft lines that feel both relaxed and contemporary. Because of its irregular forms, it pairs easily with other materials such as wood, plants, concrete or other natural stones. You can choose to edge a path neatly, but the current trend leans towards looser, more organic layouts or even using individual pieces as standalone elements within your outdoor design. This flexibility allows you to create a landscape that feels unique, creative and seamlessly connected to nature.

Key Advantages of Crazy Paving
Suitable for both applications, allowing you to create a consistent look throughout your project.
The natural surface texture provides excellent grip, making it ideal for outdoor use.
Regular cleaning with water is enough to keep the surface looking its best.
Suitable not only for horizontal surfaces like terraces and garden paths, but also for steps and small walls.

This type of natural stone can be installed following the same technical requirements as tiles, but it does require more puzzle-like fitting. This opens up many design possibilities, yet it also means you need to allow enough time to position each piece properly. Larger pieces may look more refined, but they are harder to place. You often end up filling small gaps with smaller pieces, which can make the overall pattern look less uniform.
The choice of joints also has a big impact on the final result. The colour, width, and type of jointing material all influence whether the surface appears calm, contrasting, or more refined. As a guideline, you should allow for a joint width of around 2 to 3 cm. One layer of material is calculated to cover approximately 1 m² with this joint width, and suppliers base their deliveries on this. If you choose narrower joints, you should allow for about 10% extra material when laying larger pieces and about 20% extra when laying smaller pieces, so that everything still comes together as one coherent whole.
