Anstrude: a fine-grained limestone from the heart of Burgundy
Anstrude is a pale beige oolitic limestone quarried in Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines, in the Yonne department of Burgundy. The stone belongs to the Oolithe Blanche formation and was formed during the Bathonian, around 165 to 168 million years ago. The quarry covers 32 hectares and reaches a depth of up to 40 metres.
The material has a fine grain with a light speckling of small calcite nodules and fossils. Darker calcite veins and scattered fossils can occur, as can natural colour and structure variations within a single slab. These are characteristics of the stone's natural formation and carry no technical disadvantage.
Anstrude works well for floors, walls and countertops indoors, and for facade cladding outdoors. It is less suited to outdoor flooring. Like all French limestones, Anstrude is porous: for applications with heavy moisture exposure, such as kitchen or bathroom countertops, impregnation is recommended. Limestone is not naturally acid-resistant either.
The most common finishes are honed and sawn.
