Jura Gelb: warm beige limestone with a fossil pattern
Jura is a fine-grained, compact limestone from the Altmühltal region in Germany, quarried around Treuchtlingen, Petersbuch and Eichstätt. The stone formed during the Jurassic period, when southern Germany was covered by a shallow tropical sea. That origin is still visible in the surface today: shell fragments, ammonites and white sponge spicules give every slab its own distinctive pattern. Commercially, Jura is often classified as a marble, hence the common trade name Jura Marmor.
The stone is available in two varieties. Jura Gelb combines a beige background with warm, rust-coloured zones around the natural iron minerals. Jura Graublau has a cooler beige-grey tone with a more subtle pattern. Both varieties are dense and hard, which means the surface wears remarkably slowly compared with many other limestones and marbles.
Jura is a material for indoor applications: flooring, wall cladding, staircases, window sills and fireplace surrounds. The most common finishes are polished and honed. Honed, the stone takes on a soft satin sheen that shows the fossils at their best, while a polished finish brings out the depth of colour more strongly. Always install Jura on a dry substrate using a low-acid natural stone adhesive and acid-free grout.
