Molianos Extra: Portuguese limestone with an even, fine texture
Molianos Extra is a Portuguese limestone quarried near Fatima, in the district of Leiria. The material is characterised by an evenly speckled, pale surface with no visible layered structure: fine fossil fragments are distributed uniformly across the slab. Occasionally slightly larger fossils can occur; this is inherent to sedimentary limestone and carries no technical disadvantage.
Molianos Extra is available in a honed and a polished finish. The polished finish is preferably used as a wall covering; as a floor finish it is only suitable in areas with limited wear resistance requirements, such as a bathroom. Its polish sheen is lower than that of marble or granite, giving the material a softer, more natural appearance.
The material is intended for indoor applications only. Molianos Extra can also be used as a kitchen worktop or in shower areas, though it is more susceptible to staining and discolouring in these applications than elsewhere. Very fine-grained slabs are scarce; the current range is mostly moderately fine-grained.
