Paving in Sandblasted, Flamed and Split Kilkenny Limestone, London

Situated along the south bank of London’s River Thames, between the historic Tower and London bridges, the MoreLondon Development is a major multi-functional amenity, a hub for professional, financial and recreational facilities in the metropolitan heart. Designed by Foster & Partners, the site is home to London’s iconic City Hall and Millenium Bridge which links the district to the nearby St. Paul’s Cathedral. Townshend Landscape Architects provided specialist consultation on the public landscape aspect of the project with the goal of achieving a vibrant and convivial social habitat. A key characteristic of this unconventional public space is the impressive 30,000m² of flame textured Irish Blue Limestone paving, provided by Kilkenny Limestone. In addition to the paving works, we created a dramatic, sunken limestone amphitheatre, known as The Scoop. Adjacent to City Hall, the arena seats 800 and is host to high profile public events, theatre productions and concerts. Expertly crafted seating, cladding and balustrading adorns the development, along with a unifying limestone water feature which lures pedestrians through the urban landscape.
