Travertine Kitchen Worktops: Properties, Inspiration & Maintenance
Considering travertine? Read here how you can use it in your kitchen.
Travertine is a type of limestone, but it clearly differs from traditional limestone because of how it forms. Unlike limestone, which forms in seas and oceans, travertine forms on land, near heat sources. Warm spring water dissolves calcium carbonate, which precipitates again as the water cools. This process builds up the stone layer by layer. Organic material, such as small twigs and leaves, breaks down over time and leaves small pores behind. These pores create travertine’s typical open structure.
If you choose travertine for a kitchen, it is strongly recommended to opt for filled travertine. This makes maintenance much easier and improves everyday comfort.
The same care guidelines apply to travertine as to limestone and marble. Avoid materials that can cause scratches and do not use acidic products. Travertine is heat-resistant, which makes it suitable for kitchen use.
Because travertine is a limestone and more porous than marble, sealing is essential, especially indoors, in areas sensitive to stains and moisture such as the kitchen. For this, we recommend Lithofin MN Stain-Stop. Daily care with suitable products helps keep the worktop stain-resistant and looking beautiful for longer. Unfilled travertine is less maintenance-friendly and also less durable, which is why we do not recommend this application.

Properties of Travertine Kitchen Worktops
Travertine can handle high heat well, so hot pans or dishes won’t easily leave burn marks on your worktop.
The soft natural colours give travertine a calm, welcoming character, and every slab, each variety in its own way, is a unique work of art shaped by the earth.
Because of its porous structure, travertine should be sealed to make it less prone to staining.
It’s the best option for a travertine kitchen, combining easy maintenance, everyday comfort, and long-lasting durability.

How to Maintain Travertine Worktops?

Before travertine is put into use as a kitchen worktop, it should be sealed by the installer or a professional natural stone fabricator. If this hasn’t been done, you can treat the worktop yourself with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop to make the surface more resistant to staining.

Use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean for daily maintenance. This 2-in-1 product cleans and nourishes at the same time. It removes greasy surface dirt and also helps develop a beautiful patina.
By cleaning your natural stone kitchen worktop regularly with this product, you make it more resistant and easier to maintain over time.

Clean the worktop regularly with Lithofin MN Power-Clean, and then use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean again for daily maintenance.
Tips:
Don’t use too much water. A gentle rub with a damp cloth is sufficient.
Never scrub with abrasive materials to clean dirt that is hard to remove. Using some undiluted Lithofin MN Power-Clean on a kitchen sponge is a far more durable solution.
Acid stains can be removed with Propad hand pads.
Always follow the instructions on the packaging of the maintenance products.
