Limestone Kitchen Worktops: Pros, Cons & Maintenance
Can limestone be used as a kitchen worktop? Read here what to look out for!
Limestone is characterised by a soft, unique and natural colour palette, with shades such as white, beige and grey. The stone often has subtle imperfections, such as fossils of shells, animals, plants or corals, which create a warm and calm look.
There are two types of limestone: a soft, porous white limestone (whose maintenance is discussed here) and a harder variant, blue limestone. Click the text to go to our blue limestone worktop maintenance page.
Limestone is highly durable and gives your kitchen a southern touch. To keep the worktop looking its best, we recommend maintaining it properly. Limestone is heat-resistant, but less resistant to acids, scratches and stains. Compared to marble, limestone is even more porous. That’s why it is essential to impregnate the worktop with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop.

Limestone Kitchen Worktops: Pros & Cons
Thanks to limestone’s heat resistance, your kitchen worktop can handle everyday intensive use with ease. Hot pans or dishes won’t easily leave burn marks.
The soft shades of limestone, combined with subtle imperfections, create a warm, understated character and a calm, welcoming feel.
Because limestone is even more porous than marble and is less resistant to acids, scratches and stains, it’s essential to impregnate the worktop to reduce the risk of staining.
Take care of the maintenance. Use suitable products to keep your limestone in top condition.

How to Maintain Limestone Worktops?

Before limestone is put into use as a kitchen worktop, it should be sealed by the installer or a professional natural stone fabricator. If this hasn’t been done, you can treat the worktop yourself with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop to make the surface more resistant to staining.

Use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean for daily maintenance. This 2-in-1 product cleans and nourishes at the same time. It removes greasy surface dirt and also helps develop a beautiful patina.
By cleaning your natural stone kitchen worktop regularly with this product, you make it more resistant and easier to maintain over time.

Clean the worktop regularly with Lithofin MN Power-Clean, and then use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean again for daily maintenance.
Tips:
Don’t use too much water. A gentle rub with a damp cloth is sufficient.
Never scrub with abrasive materials to clean dirt that is hard to remove. Using some undiluted Lithofin MN Power-Clean on a kitchen sponge is a far more durable solution.
Acid stains can be removed with Propad hand pads.
Always follow the instructions on the packaging of the maintenance products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Limestone-Effect Worktops
Limestone is a porous natural stone with warm, earthy tones — its soft shades, combined with subtle imperfections, create a calm, welcoming character that looks stunning in any kitchen. However, for worktops it can be a slightly riskier choice: its porous nature makes it more sensitive to acids, scratches and stains, which can lead to dull etch marks or discolouration over time.
That's why Brachot offers low-maintenance alternatives that bring the same limestone look into your kitchen, without the worry. Built on Brachot's decades of natural stone expertise, our brands have been developed to meet the highest expectations for both performance and design.
