    Blue Pearl® Extra, the select blue larvikite from Norway

    Blue Pearl® Extra is a moderately coarse-grained larvikite from the Larvik region in southern Norway, a rare alkaline plutonic rock that crystallised roughly 290 to 300 million years ago during the formation of the Oslo Graben. Its large feldspar crystals produce a bright blue, pearly reflection. This iridescence is not pigment-based: it comes from light refracting between extremely thin alternating feldspar layers inside the crystals. Blue Pearl® Extra is the HQ Plus grade from our Blue Pearl quarries, selected for its fine grain and clear blue reflections. Compared to Blue Pearl®, it shows a more intense blue; compared to Silver Pearl®, it reads as a deeper, more vivid stone.

    Brachot's own quarries at Tvedalen

    Brachot quarries Blue Pearl® Extra at Tvedalen, near Larvik, in three of our Family Member Larvik Granite's six quarries. Quarry #1 is our reference site for Blue Pearl® and Blue Pearl® Extra. Quarry #8, our newest quarry, produces the same grades with a slightly coarser grain. Quarry #9, the former Monzonite quarry, supplies the DB type: a slightly coarser and darker grain, combined with a bright blue reflection. Blocks with the finest grain and clearest blue reflections are the least common, which is why selection starts in the quarry. Most veins are removed at this stage, with full vertical control from extraction to finished product.

    Applications

    Blue Pearl® Extra is suitable for both interior and exterior use. Typical applications include kitchen worktops, indoor flooring, wall cladding, façade cladding, bathrooms and vanity units, stairs, paving, terraces, window sills, thresholds and door and window surrounds, garden ornaments and gravestones. The standard finish is polished, which brings out the blue reflection at its most intense. Because the Schiller effect makes crystals light up at certain angles and fade at others, slabs and tiles have a visible direction. On larger surfaces, consistent orientation during installation is essential.
