Irish Blue Limestone Paving from Kilkenny Limestone Quarries

Kilkenny Limestone paving slabs are quarried from dense Irish Blue Limestone with a characteristic blue-grey base and white fossil markings. The stone resists wear, frost cycles, urban pollution and de-icing salts, which makes it a long-term solution for paving exposed to traffic and winter maintenance. Available in standard and bespoke formats, in finishes ranging from sawn and flamed to stone washed, for patios, pedestrian zones, squares and streetscapes. All paving slabs are compliant with EN 1341.

Kilkenny Limestone pavers, strips and setts are small-format paving units used in pedestrian zones, squares and mixed-traffic streets. Pavers and strips are rectangular: pavers are the smaller format (for example 20/5/5 cm), strips are slightly larger and more elongated (for example 24/8/2 cm or 35/8/4 cm). Setts are square (for example 20/20/5 cm or 15/15/5 cm) and well suited to heavier loading and traditional cobbled patterns. The reduced module allows for laying patterns such as crazy paving, running bond and herringbone, and for combining finishes within a single scheme. These elements integrate with kerbstones, tactile paving and street furniture from the same Kilkenny range, which gives a consistent material language across a public realm project. Pavers and strips are compliant with EN 1341, setts with EN 1342.

Natural stone kerbs are one of the most effective ways to upgrade a streetscape, both in urban renewal schemes and in architecturally sensitive areas. Kilkenny Limestone kerbstones are dense, frost-resistant and built to outlast the asphalt and paving they border, often by several maintenance cycles. They combine well with granite setts and other natural stone elements, which makes them a reliable choice for mixed-material public realm designs. All kerbs are compliant with EN 1343.

Standard profiles include half-battered, bullnosed and splayed kerbs, alongside straight, radius and dropped units for crossings and accessibility. Quadrant kerbs and transition pieces complete the range, allowing a continuous detail across corners, level changes and profile shifts. Kerbstones are produced in variable lengths between 80 and 160 cm. This range allows us to work with the natural block dimensions from the quarry rather than cutting to fixed lengths, which reduces offcuts and maximises yield from each block. Finishes are matched to the surrounding paving.

Tactile paving in Kilkenny Limestone provides accessibility detailing that ages with the rest of the streetscape rather than standing apart from it. Available types include blister paving for pedestrian crossings, corduroy for stair and level-change warnings, and directional guidance paving. The same Irish Blue Limestone, finishes and laying logic apply across the public realm scheme, which avoids the visual disconnect that often comes with concrete or polymer tactile units.

Tactile paving is produced at our Kilkenny site under the same quality system as the rest of the range. Visual contrast requirements at crossings and platforms can be addressed by combining Irish Blue Limestone with lighter natural stone elements within the same scheme, depending on the project specification.

Beyond paving, kerbs and tactile units, Kilkenny Limestone is supplied as a wide range of hardscape elements for public space and landscape projects. These include wall cladding, low walls, steps, copings, planters, bollards, drainage channels and bespoke street furniture such as benches and seating elements. Most hardscape components are produced project-specific from full-size blocks at our Kilkenny production site, which allows architects to specify dimensions, profiles and finishes that match the rest of the scheme.

The matt, fine-grained surface of Irish Blue Limestone works alongside other materials and integrates well with green infrastructure including tree pits, planted zones and water-sensitive elements like wadis and infiltration channels. This makes it a workable base material for streetscapes that combine paving, seating, water management and planting within a single design language.
