Irish Blue Limestone Paving from Kilkenny Limestone Quarries

Quarried in Ireland, finished for paving and urban projects

LimestoneKilkenny Limestone - IEPaving

From three quarries in Carlow and Kilkenny, Kilkenny Limestone extracts and produces Irish Blue Limestone for projects across Ireland, the UK and Europe. The dense blue-grey stone, marked with white fossil traces, is supplied as paving, kerbstones, tactile elements and bespoke hardscape components. Production runs under ATG, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification.

Limestone Paving Slabs

Kilkenny Limestone paving slabs are quarried from dense Irish Blue Limestone with a characteristic blue-grey base and white fossil markings. The stone resists wear, frost cycles, urban pollution and de-icing salts, which makes it a long-term solution for paving exposed to traffic and winter maintenance. Available in standard and bespoke formats, in finishes ranging from sawn and flamed to stone washed, for patios, pedestrian zones, squares and streetscapes. All paving slabs are compliant with EN 1341.

Certified Quality and Sustainability

All Kilkenny Limestone paving products are CE marked and produced from ATG-certified materials. The ATG certification covers both the raw material and the strata in our quarries, and verifies the production processes through external audits. Production complies with the relevant European standards for natural stone paving:

  • EN 1341: slabs of natural stone for external paving

  • EN 1342: setts of natural stone for external paving

  • EN 1343: kerbs of natural stone for external paving

Kilkenny Limestone is also certified to ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). The 14001 certification is part of a broader sustainability approach that includes a zero-waste programme across all production stages and active investment in lower-impact extraction and processing.

Ireland’s Leading Limestone Quarry and Production Operation

Kilkenny Limestone operates three quarries in Ireland: Old Leighlin in County Carlow, and Kellymount and Holdensrath in County Kilkenny. Extraction, sawing and finishing all happen within the same operation, which keeps quality control, traceability and lead times under direct management. The range covers Kilkenny Limestone and Fossil Stone, supplied as paving, kerbs, hardscape elements and bespoke project work, in formats and finishes specified per project.

Tested For Slip Resistance, Frost and Durability

Irish Blue Limestone has been independently tested by Sandberg LLP (UKAS-accredited, London) for slip resistance in accordance with EN 1341:2012, alongside the technical performance characteristics that matter most for exterior paving in Ireland and the UK.

  • Compressive strength: > 100 MPa

  • Water absorption: < 0.6%

  • Frost resistance: > 168 freeze-thaw cycles, more than three times the 48-cycle requirement for class F1 under EN 12371

Sustainable enterprise

Beyond the ISO 14001 framework, Kilkenny Limestone runs a zero-waste programme that reuses offcuts and processing residue across the production chain. Solar installations at all three Irish quarries — Old Leighlin, Kellymount and Holdensrath — generate over 700,000 kWh per year, supplying clean energy directly to extraction and processing operations. Read more about Brachot's solar investments.

Water used in sawing and finishing is recirculated, and quarry restoration plans are part of every extraction permit. Sustainability is built into the operation rather than treated as a separate initiative.
