Patios in Blue Kilkenny Limestone
Quarried in Ireland, Crafted for British and Irish Weather
Few materials bring together beauty and endurance quite like blue limestone. Its dense, blue-grey character works with almost any garden style, from a sleek contemporary patio to a traditional stone-flagged courtyard, and it only grows more distinguished with age. Available in a wide range of shapes, sizes and finishes, blue limestone gives architects, landscapers and homeowners the freedom to design a patio that suits their space rather than the other way around.
Kilkenny Limestone has been quarried in Co. Carlow and Co. Kilkenny for centuries, remaining a trusted specification for heritage and contemporary architecture across the UK and Ireland today. Choosing Kilkenny Limestone for a patio means choosing a stone with a genuine track record in the exact climate it will be laid in: proven against frost, rain and heavy footfall across generations of Irish and British gardens.
For outdoor spaces, a range of textured finishes such as flamed and stonewashed combine natural good looks with a high level of slip resistance, making them a practical choice for patios, pool surrounds and anywhere bare feet are likely to be underfoot.

Production is carried out under an ISO 9001 quality management system, with quarrying certified to ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management.

Technical Specifications
3 cm is generally sufficient for pedestrian patio areas; areas subject to vehicle loads, such as driveways, require a minimum of 5 cm.
Kilkenny Limestone is dense and virtually non-porous, so it does not absorb water or stain easily, and performs reliably through wet Irish and British winters.
Typically 3 to 10 mm, depending on the chosen laying pattern and format.
required once a paved area exceeds 50 m² or 8 metres in length, and along adjoining walls, to accommodate natural movement in the sub-base.

Let Nature Do the Work
Kilkenny Limestone is dense and non-porous, which means it needs remarkably little attention once laid. Day-to-day maintenance is a breeze: a heavy shower will work wonders on grease stains after a barbecue, for example, so simply let nature take its course. A single thorough clean a year, ideally in spring or after winter, is generally enough to keep a patio looking its best. The finer points, from everyday cleaning to winter care, are covered below in our frequently asked questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
We wouldn't recommend it. A pressure washer's powerful jet can wear away the surface finish, damage the joints and open up the pores in the stone, making it more prone to green growth over time. A garden hose and a soft brush, with a mild cleaner if needed, will keep Kilkenny Limestone looking its best without risking the texture.
Beyond the Patio

Garden Path in riven Kilkenny Limestone Strips
A path in Kilkenny Limestone is as much a design feature as a functional route through the garden, opening up new sightlines and framing planting. The stone's natural colour variation shifts subtly with the light throughout the day, and it sits comfortably alongside greenery of any kind. Popular formats include flamed and sanded flags as well as crazy paving for a more organic, irregular layout.
From Quarry to Flagstone: Full Control, Start to Finish
Brachot manages the entire journey of Kilkenny Limestone in-house, from quarrying at our own sites in Co. Carlow and Co. Kilkenny through to the finished flag or sett delivered to your project. This direct control over every stage, from block extraction to final surface finish, is what allows us to guarantee consistent quality across every batch.
To meet growing demand, we have recently invested in two new tile production lines and a dedicated sett line, expanding our capacity to produce Kilkenny Limestone patio flags and paving setts in-house.
For bespoke or large-scale projects, Kilkenny Limestone is also available as raw or pre-finished slabs, which stone masons and fabricators can cut and finish to their own project specifications.
